What is a dam?

A dam holds water. A dam blocks the flow of water in rivers, streams or
estuaries. A dam is divided into lots of parts.


Where are dams built?

Dams are built over a stream, a river, a lake or an estuary. After World
War Two dams were made out of earth and rocks.




What are the purposes of dams?

The purpose of dams is to retain water and to prevent areas from
flooding.
Dams are also used for irrigation purposes.




Where are the dams?

There are five dams located in the Waitakere Ranges,
four reservoirs in the Hunua Ranges and one reservoir in Papakura.




Facts about dams

They can control hydro electric power.
The dams supply 80% percent of water.
We get 1.8 metres of rain annually.
The Waitakere dams supply 20% of Auckland’s water.
