What is Matariki?

Matariki is the Maori name for the cluster of stars known as Pleiades. The stars are seen for most of the year but they disappear in late April. The cluster of stars re-apear during the middle of winter. Matariki rises in mid-winter and is the start of the Maori New Year.

What does the name Matariki mean? What was the Maori myth behind Matariki?

There are other names for Matariki such as eyes of God, little eyes, and seven sisters. Matariki was also believed to be the name of the oldest sister. The oldest sister would guide her younger sisters to their places in the sky. There was a myth that Ranginui (the Sky Father) and Papatuanuku (the Earth Mother) were separated by their children. Then Tawhirimatea (the God of Wind) got so angry that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens.

Matariki was a time for…

Matariki was a time for remembering the people who died in the last year and also a happy time to harvest crops like kumara and taro. It was a great time to go fishing, and for hunting birds. People also flew kites because ancient custom says that they fly close to the stars. It was also a time to make plans for the future. Also during, Matariki people would sing, dance and feast. Matariki is also a time to tell stories.

Matariki celebrations, the past and today.

The celebration of Matariki had stopped in the 1940’s, but then revived in the early 2000’s. At first, not a lot of people celebrated Matariki, but over the years, thousands of people joined the celebrations.

Extra Information

The nine stars are called Matariki, Tupuarangi, Waipuna-a-Rangi, Waiti, Tupuanuku, Ururangi, Waita, Pohutukawa and Hiwa-i-te-Rangi. Each star holds a certain significance over our wellbeing and environment, as seen from the Maori view of the world.

This is my Winter Senses Poem. It is about winter.

Samoan Language Week

 Finally it was the day of the Umu but it was also the day that Miss Haslem was going to leave us.  It was also Miss Haslem’s last day which was very sad. I wanted Miss Haslem to stay longer. The Samoan children in the school were wearing their beautiful traditional Samoan clothes.

Before we went into the hall or unpack the Umu we were on the courts in front of the flag. Mr T was going to raise the Samoan flag up the flagpole. Mr T started singing the Samoan national anthem and then some other people started singing. I tried to sing along but it was hard since I didn’t know any words.

I was so excited to see the process of the Umu because it was a once in a lifetime thing that I would see. The Umu had four layers. The four layers were Newspaper (Top Layer), Banana Leaves (Second Layer), Tin Foil to wrap around the food and Hot Rocks to heat the food up. 

I could smell the Umu from far away. It smelt so good. It was very smoky but luckily it didn’t smell like a bonfire, instead it smelt delicious. It smelt like some yummy food. It looked so good that I just wanted to eat it immediately. I was so happy to see the process of unpacking an Umu. 

After the umu was unpacked it was all put into the hall on tables. It was very nice how they put Samoan patterned cloths on the table. It had red, green, blue and white colours on the Samoan patterned cloths. We had to sit down on the floor and we waited. Father came into the hall to bless the food we just sat there and listened to the prayer. It was a very nice prayer. There were loads of different kinds of Samoan food such as Chop Suey, Seafood Salad, Taro, Coconut, Pig (Pork), Poupou, Raw Fish, Banana, Taro Leaves, Pork Buns and Rice. It all smelt so good. 

We were called up class by class to get our food. Room 6 went first, followed by Room 5, then Room 4, and finally it was my class Room 2 / 3.  There was a massive long line when it was finally our classes turn to get up and get some food but since there was a massive long line Miss Paton called us up one by one. Deevon was handing out the plastic bowls. When we got closer to the tables of food Damian’s Mum Marcella wrapped a paper towel around our fork nicely then gave it to us. When it was my turn different people were asking me if I wanted this or that. When I said “Yes, I’ll have some Chop Suey”. Then Ayla and Aden’s brother Lawson asked me if I wanted some Banana leafs and I said “No thanks”. Then I went on getting other types of food. Virginia asked me if I wanted to get some Pork Bun and Roast Pig and I said “Yes please” because it looked nice to eat. The last thing I got was the seafood salad. The Chop Suey was very nice to eat, it was delicious. The Pork Bun was alright to eat because the pork inside it didn’t taste very nice and the Roast Pig was very yummy and delicious and because it was roasted it was also quite oily. The last thing I ate was the Seafood Salad. The Seafood Salad contained raw prawns, crab stick, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and a special sauce which I didn’t know what it was called. After I finished my food, I got some more Seafood Salad because I liked it so much and I wouldn’t be able to eat it again in a long time. It was my chance to get some more. If I was to rate the food I ate I would rate it a 9 out of ten. We got an extended lunchtime so when we got back to class it was already like around 2:35PM so we had to just pack up for the end of the day. I was really sad because I really wanted to present my migration presentation to Miss Haslem because it was her last day with us.

Overall I had a great day and I had so much fun. It was an exciting day and also a sad day.

Once upon a time there were Three Bears. One day their porridge was too hot so then they went out into the forest for a walk and they left their cottage window open. A little girl named Goldilocks was so hungry that she smelt some porridge inside the cottage so she climbed through the window. She got inside the Three Bear’s cottage and tried Daddy Bear’s porridge first. 

She said to herself “Yuck, I don’t like it”. “This is way too salty for me to eat”.So she tried Mummy Bear’s porridge and she said to herself “Yuck, I seriously don’t like this porridge”. “It is way, way, way too sweet for me to eat”. 

Lastly she tried Baby Bear’s porridge and she said to herself “Yummy, this porridge is perfect for me and it is also just right”.

After she finished eating the porridge, she went into the Three Bear’s living room and she saw three chairs. First Goldilocks tried Daddy Bear’s chair and she 

said to herself “Ugh, this chair is way too high for me to sit on” . Then she got off Daddy Bear’s chair and tried Mummy bear’s chair and said to herself “Hmm, this chair is too soft”.

So she got off Mummy Bear’s chair and tried Baby Bear’s chair. Goldilocks said to herself “I love this chair and it’s very comfortable for me to sit on”. As she sat on the chair for a long time, suddenly the chair broke into many pieces. Goldilocks fell down onto the floor. 

After some time Goldilocks went into the Three Bear’s bedroom and she saw three beds. She went and tried Daddy Bear’ s bed and she said to herself “Hmm, this bed is way too high for me to sleep in”. So she tried Mummy Bear’ s bed and she said to herself “Umm, this is too low for me to sleep and I don’t like this bed”. Then she tried Baby Bear’s bed and she said to herself “Umm, this bed is just right and I love it”. “It is very comfortable”.

As time went by Goldilocks fell fast asleep in Baby Bear’s bed. The Three Bears came back home but then Daddy bear growled “Who’s been eating my porridge?”. 

Then Mummy Bear said in a low voice ``Who's been eating my porridge?”. Then Baby Bear said grumpily “Who’s been eating my porridge and has eaten it till the very last drop”. So then the Three Bears went into the living room. Daddy Bear growled “Who’s been sitting in my chair?”. Mummy Bear said in a low voice “Who’s been sitting in my chair?”

Baby Bear cried “Someone’s been sitting in my chair and has also broken it into pieces”.

After that the Three Bear’s went into their bedroom. Daddy Bear growled “Who’s been sleeping in my bed?”. 

 Mummy bear said softly “Who’s been sleeping in my bed?”. Baby Bear cried out “Who’s been sleeping in my bed? and is still sleeping in my bed”.

Suddenly all the noise the Three Bears made woke Goldilocks up. Goldilocks got frightened by the Three Bears so she quickly got out of the bed. She ran down the stairs and went out of the Three Bear’s cottage. She ran into the forest and was never seen again. The Three Bears never left their window open again and they lived happily ever after.

English and Cantonese Retelling of Goldilocks and The Three Bears

Once upon a time there were 三隻熊. One day there 稀飯 / 粥 was too 熱 so they went out into the  森林 for a walk and they left there 茅屋 window open. 

A little girl called 金發姑娘 was so hungry and she smelt some 稀飯 / 粥 so she went inside and tried all the 稀飯 / 粥. 

First 金發姑娘 tried 熊爸爸  稀飯 / 粥 and she 

said to herself “Mmmm. Yuck, too 咸.” 

so then 金發姑娘 tried 熊媽媽 稀飯 / 粥 and 

she said to herself “Mmmm. Yuck, too 甜的.” 

and then 金發姑娘 tried 小熊  稀飯 / 粥 and she 

said to herself “Mmmm, this is 正好.”  

So then she ate all of 小熊  稀飯 / 粥 till the very last drop.

So after 金發姑娘 finished the 稀飯 / 粥 she went further into the 茅屋. 金發姑娘 saw three 椅子 so she tried 熊爸爸 椅子 and 

she said to herself “Ugh, this 椅子 is too 難的”. 

So then she went and tried 熊媽媽 but she said  to herself “This 椅子 is too 軟”. 

So then she tried 小熊 椅子 and she said to herself “This 椅子 is 正好”

But as soon as she sat on 小熊 椅子 it 壞了的 into many pieces and she fell to the ground. 

After that she went even further into the 茅屋 and upstairs to the 三隻熊 bedroom.

金發姑娘 saw three beds and 金發姑娘 tried  熊爸爸 床 first. 金發姑娘 said to herself “Mmm, this is 床 is too 太高”.

So then 金發姑娘 went and tried 熊媽媽 床 and she said to herself “This 床 is too 太低”.

So then she finally tried 小熊 床 and she said to herself “This 床 is 正好 for me and also very 舒服的”.

So she fell fast asleep in 小熊 in 床. 

After a while the 三隻熊 came back to their 茅屋. They saw there had been someone eaten some of their 稀飯 / 粥 and then 熊爸爸 

growled “Who’s been eating my 稀飯 / 粥?!” 

Then 熊媽媽 said softly “Who’s been eating my 稀飯 / 粥?”. 

Then 小熊 said unhappily “Who’s been eating my 稀飯 / 粥 and who’s eaten it until the very last drop?”. 

So then the 三隻熊 went into the living room and  熊爸爸 growled “Someone has sat on my 椅子”. 

But then 熊媽媽 said softly “Someone has also sat on my 椅子”.

Then 小熊 said “Someone has sat on my 椅子 and also has 壞了的 my 椅子 into many pieces”.

After that they went upstairs to their bedroom and 熊爸爸

growled “Who’s been sleeping in my bed?”. 

So then 熊媽媽 said softly “Who’s been sleeping in my bed?”

but then 小熊 said sadly “Who’s been sleeping in my bed and is still sleeping in my 床”. 

Then all the noise the 三隻熊 made 金發姑娘 wake up. When she woke up she got 受驚. So then 金發姑娘 got out of bed and rushed down the stairs and got out of 茅屋. She ran away out into the 森林 and never came back again. The 三隻熊 never went out of the their  茅屋 or leave their windows open again.

金发姑娘和三只熊

从前有三只熊。有一天他们的粥太热了，于是他们走进森林散步，他们把小屋的窗户打开了。一个叫金发姑娘的小女孩太饿了，以至于她在小屋里闻了些稀饭，于是她爬上窗户进入三只熊的小屋，先尝试了爸爸的稀饭，然后

对自己说：“糟糕，我不喜欢它。这太咸了，我无法食用。”

所以她什么时候尝试了妈咪熊的粥，她

对自己说：“好极了，我真的不喜欢这种稀饭。这太甜了，我不能吃了。”

最后，她尝试了小熊的粥，然后

对自己说：“好吃，这粥对我来说很完美，也很合适”。

吃完稀饭后，她走进了三只熊的客厅，看到了三把椅子。最初的金发姑娘先尝试了爸爸熊的椅子，然后她

对自己说：“ Ugh，这把椅子太高了，我无法坐在上面”

所以她下了爸爸熊的椅子，尝试了妈妈熊的椅子，

对自己说：“嗯，这把椅子太软了”

所以她下了木乃伊熊的椅子，然后尝试了小熊的椅子和金发姑娘

对自己说：“我喜欢这把椅子，坐起来也很舒服”

但是随后当她坐在椅子上更长的时间时，椅子突然碎成许多块，然后Goldilocks掉到了地板上。

一段时间后，高迪洛克一家进入了三只熊的卧室，她看到了三张床。她去尝试了爸爸熊的床，她

对自己说：“嗯，这床太高了，我无法入睡。”

所以她尝试了妈咪熊的床，

对自己说：“嗯，这太低了，我无法入睡，我不喜欢这张床。”

所以她尝试了婴儿熊的床，

对自己说：“嗯，这张床是正确的，我喜欢它，它也很舒适”。

随着时间的流逝，金发姑娘在婴儿熊的床上睡着了，三只熊回到了家，但随后爸爸熊

咆哮着“谁在吃我的稀饭！”

然后是木乃伊熊

低声说：“谁一直在吃我的稀饭”

但后来小熊脾气暴躁地说：“谁一直在吃我的稀饭，还吃过我的稀饭直到最后一滴。”因此，这三只熊进入客厅，然后是爸爸熊

咆哮着“谁坐在我的椅子上”

然后是木乃伊熊

低声说：“谁坐在我的椅子上”

但是后来小熊哭了，“有人坐在我的椅子上，也把它弄碎了”。

之后，三只熊进入他们的卧室，然后是爸爸熊

咆哮着“谁在我床上睡觉”

和木乃伊熊

轻声说：“谁一直在我的床上睡觉”

然后是熊宝宝

喊道“谁一直在我的床上睡觉，而现在仍在我的床上睡觉”。

突然，三只熊发出的所有声音都使金发姑娘醒来，金发姑娘被三只熊吓到了，于是她迅速下床，跑下楼梯，走出三只熊的小屋，跑到森林里，从没见过三只熊再也没有离开过窗户，从此以后他们过着幸福快乐的生活。
